Key Features and Benefits of Clad Steel

Outstanding Corrosion Resistance
One of the most significant advantages of clad steel is their exceptional resistance to corrosion. This makes clad steel ideal for use in chemical processing plants, offshore oil platforms, and marine vessels, where exposure to aggressive environments is common.

Cost Efficiency
By using a relatively thin layer of stainless steel over a carbon steel core, manufacturers can reduce the cost while maintaining excellent performance. This makes clad steel an attractive option for industries that require corrosion resistance but are constrained by budget.

High Strength and Durability
Clad steels are capable of withstanding high-pressure environments, making them ideal for applications such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and storage tanks. The material's strength ensures its ability to perform under demanding conditions, while the stainless steel layer provides resilience against physical wear, temperature extremes, and oxidation.

Temperature Resistance
The combined properties of strength and thermal resistance allow clad steels to handle extreme temperature cycles without degrading, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh conditions.

Types of Clad Steel

01

Stainless Steel-Clad Steel

Stainless steel-clad steel combines the resilience of stainless steel with the mechanical strength of carbon steel. It is commonly used in the construction of chemical processing plants, food processing equipment, and architectural elements.

02

Titanium-Clad Steel

Titanium-clad steel leverages titanium's superior corrosion resistance and lightweight properties. This type is extensively used in aerospace, marine, and medical applications where both strength and resistance to harsh conditions are critical.

03

Copper-Clad Steel

Copper-clad steel benefits from the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity of copper and the strength of steel. It is often employed in electrical grounding systems, heat exchangers, and architectural features for its conductivity and attractive appearance.

Applications of Clad Steel

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry
In the chemical and petrochemical industries, clad steels are used for reactors, tanks, piping systems, and vessels that come into contact with highly corrosive materials like acids, alkalis, and organic compounds. The steel cladding ensures that the equipment can resist the aggressive chemical environment while the carbon steel core supports the structural integrity required for large-scale operations.

Marine and Offshore Applications
The marine and offshore sectors require materials that can withstand prolonged exposure to seawater, humidity, and salt corrosion. Clad steels are used extensively in shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and subsea pipelines. These plates offer the necessary strength to support heavy loads and provide long-lasting protection against corrosion in harsh marine environments.

Energy Sector
In the energy industry, especially in the oil and gas sector, clad steels are employed in high-pressure equipment, such as refining equipment, heat exchangers, and storage tanks. The combination of strength, resistance to corrosion, and temperature resilience ensures these materials can operate efficiently in environments with high pressures and temperatures.

Food and Pharmaceutical Industries
Clad steels are also used in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries for manufacturing equipment like mixers, reactors, and storage tanks. These industries require materials that are easy to clean and maintain, and the steel cladding provides the added benefit of hygiene and corrosion resistance, making it easier to meet strict regulatory standards.

Clad Steel Manufacturing Process

Preparation

The bonding surface of both cladding metal and backing steel are ground and thoroughly cleaned. The bonding surface of the cladding metal is nickel-plated to ensure metallurgical bond. The reverse side of the cladding metal is coated with an infusible parting compound.

Assembly

Two pairs of plates, each with the backing steel outside and cladding metal inside are matched together to form a composite assembly and then sealed along the edges by welding. The welding is performed to protect the corrosion resistant alloy from possible contamination by exposure to atmosphere during heating before rolling.

Rolling, Heat-Treating and Cutting

The composite assembly is heated to the proper temperature in a heating furnace and rolled to the given sizes in order to bond the cladding and backing materials metallurgically. After rolling, the assembly is heat-treated as required considering the mechanical properties of the backing steel and corrosion resistance of the cladding metal. The assembly is then separated into two clad plates to be cut into given dimensions.

Surface Finishing and Packaging

Both cladding and backing plates are surface-finished to eliminate injurious defects. In particular, the corrosion- resistant surface of the cladding metal is ground by abrasive belt and pickled. The finished clad plates are shipped with the surfaces properly protected against damage during transportation.

FAQ

Q: What is clad plate? How is it different from solid stainless steel?

A: Clad plate has a carbon steel base + stainless cladding, offering strength and corrosion resistance at lower cost than solid stainless.

Q: How is minimum cladding thickness ensured?

A: We control tolerance (e.g., +0.2/-0.1mm) and provide thickness reports and 100% UT to guarantee minimum cladding.

Q: Can clad plates be welded?

A: Yes. Use matching filler (e.g., E309L), weld base first, then cladding, with transition layer to prevent dilution.

Q: Suitable for pressure vessels?

A: Yes, compliant with NB/T 47002, ASTM A263, PED, widely used in ASME, GB, EN pressure equipment.

As one of the most professional clad steel manufacturers and suppliers in China, we offer a wide range of products with superior quality. Please rest assured to wholesale high-grade clad steel at competitive price from our factory. Contact us for more details.
