ASTM A53/A53M is a fundamental and highly significant standard developed by ASTM International. It governs several types of ordinary carbon steel pipe intended for conveying fluids and mechanical/structural applications. It is one of the most widely used pipe specifications in the United States.

Scope: This specification is intended for both mechanical and pressure applications (e.g., conveying steam, water, air, oil, gas) and for structural purposes (e.g., supports, scaffolding, guard rails). It is NOT intended for specialized high-temperature/pressure boiler service (see ASTM A106 for that).

Main Grades:

Grade A: Minimum Yield Strength of 33,000 psi (230 MPa). Chemical composition requirements are more lenient; mechanical properties are primarily assured.

Grade B: Minimum Yield Strength of 35,000 psi (240 MPa). This is the most commonly used grade. It has stricter chemical composition requirements (notably for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur), generally offering better weldability and formability than Grade A.

Dimensions: Covers a wide range of sizes from NPS 1/8 to NPS 26 (DN 6 to DN 650), with various wall thicknesses (Standard, Extra Strong, Double Extra Strong schedules).

Chemical Composition: Specifies limits for elements like carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur (especially for Grade B).

Mechanical Properties: Defines minimum yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation requirements.

Hydrostatic Test: All pipe must undergo a hydrostatic test to ensure pressure-withstanding capability.

Process & Inspection: Includes manufacturing processes, non-destructive examination (e.g., eddy current or ultrasonic for Types E and S), and requirements for zinc-coating weight.

Significance of the "M" Suffix: The "M" in the designation indicates that the standard incorporates metric (SI) units. Therefore, ASTM A53/A53M is a dual-units standard, providing technical requirements in both inch-pound units and International System of Units (SI). SI units are typically presented in parentheses.
