GB/T 14976-2012 "Seamless Stainless Steel Pipes for Fluid Transportation" is a Chinese national standard that specifies the classification, designation, ordering information, dimensions, shape, weight, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, marking, and quality certifications for seamless stainless steel pipes used in fluid transportation systems.

This standard applies to seamless stainless steel pipes intended for conveying fluids in various industrial applications such as chemical processing, oil and gas, water treatment, and other corrosive service environments. It covers a wide range of stainless steel grades with different chemical compositions and mechanical properties to meet specific operating conditions.

Main Technical Content

1. Steel Grades and Chemical Composition

The standard specifies four major categories of stainless steel grades-austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic, and martensitic-along with their corresponding chemical composition requirements. Each grade imposes strict limits on elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to ensure material corrosion resistance and mechanical performance.

2. Manufacturing Methods

Pipes are manufactured by hot rolling (extrusion, expansion) or cold drawing (rolling) and must undergo solution treatment or annealing to relieve stress, improve microstructure, and enhance corrosion resistance.

3. Mechanical Properties

The standard defines mechanical performance indicators for each grade, including tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. For example, austenitic stainless steel pipes typically require a tensile strength of not less than 520 MPa, yield strength of not less than 205 MPa, and elongation of not less than 35%.

4. Process Performance

Flattening Test: Evaluates ductility and weld quality

Flaring Test: Assesses the pipe's flaring capability

Hydrostatic Test: Checks pressure-bearing capacity and sealing performance

Non-Destructive Testing: Employs eddy current or ultrasonic testing to detect internal defects

5. Dimensions, Shape, and Weight

The standard specifies allowable deviations for pipe dimensions such as outer diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, and ovality, as well as theoretical weight calculation methods.

6. Surface Quality

The inner and outer surfaces of pipes must be smooth and free from defects such as cracks, folds, delamination, seams, or rolling marks. Minor scratches or dents with depths not exceeding the wall thickness tolerance are permitted.

Scope of Application

This standard applies to seamless stainless steel pipes used for conveying fluid media such as water, steam, air, and petroleum products. It is widely used in industries including petrochemicals, power generation, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, papermaking, and environmental protection. Different grades of pipes can be selected based on operating conditions such as the corrosiveness, temperature, and pressure of the conveyed medium.

Issued on May 11, 2012, and effective from February 1, 2013, this standard replaced the previous version GB/T 14976-2002. It remains the current authoritative technical specification for seamless stainless steel pipes for fluid transportation in China.
