1. Basic Information

GOST 8732-78 is a Russian (formerly Soviet) national standard that specifies the size range of seamless hot-deformed steel pipes. It was approved by the State Committee of Standards of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on March 22, 1978, and officially implemented on January 1, 1979. The standard is currently effective, as the limitation of its effectiveness period was lifted by Protocol No. 3-93 of the IGU dated March 3, 1993.

This standard is closely paired with GOST 8731-87 (Technical Requirements for Seamless Hot-Deformed Steel Pipes), where GOST 8732-78 defines dimensional parameters and GOST 8731-87 regulates material properties, mechanical performance, and inspection rules. It is also equivalent to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) Standard ST SEV 1481-78.

2.Scope of Application

GOST 8732-78 applies to general-purpose seamless hot-rolled steel pipes, covering carbon steels (e.g., Grade 10, Grade 20) and low-alloy steels (e.g., Grade 09G2S). It serves as a core specification for dimension selection in pipe manufacturing, international trade, and engineering design, guiding the production of pipes used for fluid transportation and structural applications.

3. Core Dimensional Specifications

3.1 Outer Diameter

The standard covers an outer diameter range of 25 mm to 820 mm, with wall thicknesses from 2.5 mm to 75 mm. In practical production and supply, the commonly available specifications are outer diameters of 42 mm to 550 mm and wall thicknesses of 3.0 mm to 75 mm. The outer diameter tolerance varies by pipe size and precision level:

For pipes with an outer diameter of ≤ 50 mm: ± 0.5 mm

For pipes with an outer diameter of 50 mm to 219 mm: ± 1.0% (ordinary accuracy) and ± 0.8% (improved accuracy)

For pipes with an outer diameter of > 219 mm: ± 1.25% (ordinary accuracy) and ± 1.0% (improved accuracy)

3.2 Wall Thickness

The standard specifies wall thickness series corresponding to different outer diameters in Table 1. Wall thickness tolerances are determined by the pipe's outer diameter and wall thickness, expressed as percentages, with variations between ordinary and improved accuracy:

For pipes with an outer diameter of ≤ 219 mm and wall thickness ≤ 15 mm: +12.5%, -15.0% (ordinary accuracy); ± 12.5% (improved accuracy)

For pipes with an outer diameter of ≤ 219 mm and wall thickness of 15 mm to 30 mm: +10.0%, -12.5% (ordinary accuracy); ± 12.5% (improved accuracy)

For pipes with an outer diameter of ≤ 219 mm and wall thickness ≥ 30 mm: ± 10.0% (ordinary accuracy); +10.0%, -12.5% (improved accuracy)

Additionally, the ovality and wall thickness unevenness of the pipes shall not exceed the limit deviations of the outer diameter and wall thickness specified in the standard.

3.3 Length

The standard defines three length types, with tolerances as follows:

Random length: 4.0 m to 12.5 m, with a tolerance of ± 500 mm

Specified length: Within the random length range. For total length ≤ 6 m, tolerance is +10 mm; for total length > 6 m or outer diameter > 152 mm, tolerance is +15 mm.

Multiple length: Within the random length range, with an additional 5 mm tolerance per cut. For pipes with wall thickness ≥ 16 mm, the specified and multiple lengths shall be agreed upon by the manufacturer and customer based on billet weight and production equipment capabilities.

4. Shape Tolerances

4.1 Curvature

The curvature of any section of the pipe shall not exceed the following values per meter length:

1.5 mm for pipes with wall thickness ≤ 20 mm

2.0 mm for pipes with wall thickness of 20 mm to 30 mm

4.0 mm for pipes with wall thickness > 30 mm

4.2 End Requirements

Pipe ends shall be flat, and burrs from cutting must be removed to ensure compatibility during connection.

Pipes compliant with GOST 8732-78 are widely used in petroleum, chemical, electric power, machinery manufacturing, and construction industries. They are suitable for conveying fluids such as oil, natural gas, water, and steam, as well as for structural purposes (e.g., mechanical parts, petroleum drill pipes, and steel scaffolding).
