1. Main Content of EN 10216 Standard
EN 10216 is the core European standard system for seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes. It specifies the technical requirements for critical equipment such as pressure vessels, boilers, and high-temperature pipelines. As a harmonized standard under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), compliance with EN 10216 presumes conformity with PED's essential safety requirements, serving as a "passport" for products entering the European market.
The standard system is divided into 5 parts, each addressing different operating conditions:
EN 10216-1: Non-alloy steel tubes with specified room temperature properties. Suitable for pressure vessels in ambient or low-temperature environments.
EN 10216-2: Non-alloy and alloy steel tubes with specified elevated temperature properties. Used for boilers, superheaters, and other high-temperature applications.
EN 10216-3: Alloy fine grain steel tubes. Designed for welded pressure vessels with special requirements for strength and toughness.
EN 10216-4: Non-alloy and alloy steel tubes with specified low temperature properties. Suitable for ultra-low temperature environments like LNG storage tanks.
EN 10216-5: Stainless steel tubes. Used for pressure equipment requiring corrosion resistance.
2. Common Steel Grade Selection Table (by Application)
表格
Application Environment Recommended Grade (Partial) Typical Uses Key Advantages & Characteristics
General Pressure Vessels P235TR1 / P235TR2 Low-pressure gas tanks, water treatment equipment Non-alloy steel, low cost, good weldability. TR2 grade offers better low-temperature impact toughness.
High-Temp Boilers/Piping P265GH Boiler drums, high-temperature steam pipes Non-alloy steel with good elevated temperature strength and weldability. One of the most common grades for high-temp use.
Medium-Temp Alloy Piping 16Mo3 Boiler superheaters, waste heat boilers Molybdenum alloy steel with excellent creep resistance and strength at high temperatures, superior to P265GH.
Low-Temperature Environments P355NL1 / P355NL2 Low-temp pressure vessels, LNG pipelines Fine grain steel. NL1 is for -50°C, and NL2 is for cryogenic environments down to -196°C, offering excellent toughness.
Corrosive Environments 1.4301 (304) Chemical pipelines, food & pharma equipment Austenitic stainless steel with versatile corrosion resistance and good formability.
High-Strength Corrosion Res. 1.4462 (Duplex) Offshore platforms, desalination plants Duplex stainless steel with twice the strength of austenitic steel and excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion.
